So a few days ago I was in a stationery, when a lady walked in with a zillion piercings and more tattoos than I could count. Okay, okay, it wasnt a zillion piercings, it was maybe 6 or so, not counting her ears and she had a few tattoos on her arms, from pictorials to writings. Her hair was dyed pink at the top and it was brunette and black at the back. She was dressed like a hippie and I liked it. It was apparent that she wasn't from Jamaica, not due to her being caucasian, because we do have many white people living here, but because of her strong accent. If I were to guess, I would say she came from Scotland, but I honestly don't know. The attendants in the store were really nice, don't know where their customer service skills came from (in Jamaica customer service is duly lacking, but then again she was a tourist, maybe that's why she was treated so nicely to her face). Yes, to her face, cuz I soon as she stepped out the store, those said attendants massacred that same lady. 'Why she haffi do harself suh fa?' 'Yuh can put aaan tattoo, but nuh suh much.' 'A dem white people deh alone do dem summn deh, dem just weird suh.' 'A dem mek Jamaican people start fallow dem, a mark up, mark up dem self suh like ediat.' Those were the nicer things that were said. It was strange to me how they could tear down someone they have never met before, much less have a conversation with. I felt disappointed, but honestly not surprised. I will not suggest their thinking is due to their socio- economic status, as I have associated myself with the upper class of society many times and the attitude has been, honestly the same.
Feeling comfortable in your skin, is a powerful thing! The young lady in the stationery was super cool, in her temperament and it seemed as if she didn't have a care in the world.
I went by the post office shortly after my stationery episode. What joy it was to see someone from the circus or so it seemed, they gawked, they whispered and invited workers from the back of the post office to scrutinize the unusual specimen they recently found. I felt so insulted and they were not even looking at me. It was as if they just discovered light, behold this new and different thing! Its's flipping 2011 and the world is no longer strange, we see tourist everyday and if you don't I'm sure you are aware of what a functional television is. No need to talk of cable, as almost everything that is displayed on cable comes on our local channels. Throughout this bizarre affair, the same young lady from the stationery did not seem one bit perturbed; I raised my hat to her. She stood calm and happy.
Now the morale of the story?
Be yourself, whom ever that is! As long as you are not hurting yourself or someone in the process and all your activities are legal, just be you. Be the best you can be! If you wanna have one lock at the top of your head dyed yellow, wear white for the rest of your life, have tattoos only on your fingers, be you. only you can make you truly happy. I'm not saying to be Lady Gaga, though reading back it kinda sounds that way, lmao. Okay, what I'm saying is be happy with the inner you and the outer you. Be comfortable in your skin because its one of the best things you can do for you.
